SoCal Rail Travel Meetup Group to San Luis Obispo. See:

This will be a one day rail outing to San Luis Obispo and back. Northbound Amtrak Pacific Surfliner #799 departs from Los Angeles at 7:30 AM and arrives into San Luis Obispo at 12:45 PM. If you are starting further south than Los Angeles, you can take a northbound Metrolink train to Los Angeles. For Metrolink schedules, see: 
MetrolinkTrains.com. We'll then take Southbound Amtrak Pacific Surfliner Train #798 departing San Luis Obispo at 2:00 PM that arrives back into Los Angeles at 7:40 PM. Those going further south can change trains to Southbound Amtrak Pacific Surfliner Train #592 departing Los Angeles at 8:30 PM.

Northbound at Guadalupe we will all call the Del Monte Cafe in SLO to order our lunches which we will pick up when we walk over there. Eat it there or back at the train station.

The trip will mostly be a train ride with little time in SLO for anything else!
