Orange Empire Railway Museum The museum was organized in 1956 by trolley and electric railway enthusiasts to preserve a fast disappearing way of transportation. Visitors can ride on classic trolleys, passenger trains, and other railroad equipment. Two trolleys run on a half-mile loop line. Another train, pulling freight or passenger cars operates on the 1.5-mile standard gauge main line. The cars and locomotives are rotated from the museum's collection, which contains more than 180 vintage pieces.

Laws Railroad Museum The 11-acre museum is home to the largest collection of equipment that operated on the Southern Pacific's narrow gauge empire. Museum displays include SP4-6-0 no. 9, on of the last three steam engines to operate on the line, various freight cars, a caboose, a turntable, and the original station. The museum has built a number of structures to show what Laws looked like in its heyday.

California State Railroad Museum This is among the best interpretive museums about railroading. Cable Car Museum This is a museum that tells the history of the cable car in San Francisco , from its start in 1873. The museum houses several historic cable cars. Also on display are photos, tools, and models. As part of the Washington-Mason line powerhouse and carbarn, the museum isn't static. You'll see cable cars come and go all day. You can also view three antique cable cars from the 1870s.

Society for the Preservation of Carter Railroad Resources Visit this museum on a work day and you'll see restoration efforts of wooden cars completed using hand tools and 19th century techniques. Most cars the society preserves were built by Carter Brothers in Newark. For a one-of-a-kind experience, April through November, you can ride a train car pulled by Belgian draft horses. Narrow gauge steam trains operate once a year.

South Coast Railroad Museum The museum's centerpiece is the historic Goleta depot, a Victorian-styled Southern Pacific country station. the museum features hands-on exhibits and a SP caboose. Railway & Locomotive Historical Society, So Cal Chapter Featuring classic gingerbread architecture, a former AT&SF depot was moved to the Los Angeles Fairplex. The museum includes indoor exhibits and outdoor displays of rolling stock and locomotives, including a Union Pacific Big Boy. You can visit the museum during the county fair in September or during open house weekends each month.

Millbrae Train Museum The Millbrae Historical Society operates a museum containing photos, artifacts, and documents related to the railroad history of the Millbrae area. Housed in the former Southern Pacific train station, the museum displays a 1941 Pullman sleeper, with its original configuration and paint scheme, from the City of San Francisco streamliner. The museum is opened on Saturdays.

Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad & Transportaion Museum The museum's collection features NCNGRR engine no. 5. The 1875 Baldwin hauled timber, passengers, and freight. Other narrow gauge locomotives and wooden railcars are on display as are a 1901 steam-power carriage and other historic transportation pieces. Docent-led tours of the museum are available.

Lomita Railroad Museum This museum is a replica of the Boston & Maine station at Wakefield, Mass. You can climb into the cab of Southern Pacific no. 1765, a 2-6-0 Baldwin built in 1902, and walk inside a 1910 UP caboose. Several freight cars and a wooden water tower are also displayed. The museum exhibits lanterns, china, and other artifacts.

Two one-hour diesel-powered excursions run every Saturday. Twice a month, the two-foot narrow gauge Shelby & Southern also operates 15 minute trips.In addition to its regular excursion train, the museum offers monthly dinner trains aboard the Willliam Penn.
